Catacresi e metafora nella retorica antica: dalla forza creativa al declino di un tropo

L’articolo indaga i rapporti tra catacresi e metafora nella retorica antica mediante l’analisi delle fonti che ne evidenziarono le analogie e ne misero in rilievo le differenze, allo scopo di individuare i presupposti che generarono le differenti e talvolta contraddittorie definizioni di catacresi nelle teorie retoriche moderne. Si dimostra che la confusione che riguardò le relazioni tra i due fenomeni si verificò a causa dall’ambigua valenza dei termini μεταφορά-traslatum o tra(ns)latio e κατάχρησις-abusio, cui era riservato un significato più allargato o più ristretto in funzione del contesto retorico in cui erano utilizzati. The article investigates the relationship between catachresis and metaphor in ancient rhetoric, by analyzing the Greek and Latin texts that highlighted the similarities and differences between them, and by doing so has been able to identify the conditions that generated the different and sometimes contradictory definitions of catachresis in the modern rhetorical theories. In conclusion, the article shows that the confusion concerning the relations between the two phenomena occurred because of the ambiguous valence of the terms μεταφορά-translatum or tra(ns)latio and κατάχρησις-abusio, to which a wider or narrower meaning was reserved according to the rhetorical context in which they were used.
