In this work the discovery potential of the ATLAS and the CMS experiments is discussed for physics beyond the Standard Model. Different scenarios as supersymmetry, extra dimensions, new gauge bosons and new long-lived particles predicted by different theoretical models are considered. Particular focus is given on signatures which can be observed in the first year of LHC running. For each analysis, details on the experimental techniques to extract backgrounds from data and to reduce the most relevant systematics are given.

Abstract
In this work the discovery potential of the ATLAS and the CMS experiments is discussed for physics beyond the Standard Model. Different scenarios as supersymmetry, extra dimensions, new gauge bosons and new long-lived particles predicted by different theoretical models are considered. Particular focus is given on signatures which can be observed in the first year of LHC running. For each analysis, details on the experimental techniques to extract backgrounds from data and to reduce the most relevant systematics are given.File in questo prodotto:
