The Sudanese Maḥmūd Muḥammad Ṭāhā (1909-1985) is a well-known figure in Islamic political and religious thought. His most famous book, The Second Message of Islam, has been translated into many languages, but his output, which together with the Republican Brothers’ publications totals more than 300 titles, deserves to be explored in more detail. Here we analyse Ṭāhā’s short work on Marxism, seeking to highlight how the mystical philosophy of the oneness of being serves as a lens for him to confront Marxist thought from an Islamic point of view. The analysis of the text is preceded by a biographical-political profile showing how his political career has encountered that of the Sudanese Communist Party.
