This article investigates the meaning that the ancients attributed to metalepsis in the specialized lexicon of rhetoric, which was very different from what metalepsis assumes in modern theories of narratology. The work is based upon the analysis of ancient sources drawn mainly from little-known rhetorical texts, which are not available in modern translations. These texts show divergences and affinities between definitions, uses and examples. Therefore a description of the semantic evolution of the rhetorical phenomenon up to the late ancient age is proposed.

Abstract
This article investigates the meaning that the ancients attributed to metalepsis in the specialized lexicon of rhetoric, which was very different from what metalepsis assumes in modern theories of narratology. The work is based upon the analysis of ancient sources drawn mainly from little-known rhetorical texts, which are not available in modern translations. These texts show divergences and affinities between definitions, uses and examples. Therefore a description of the semantic evolution of the rhetorical phenomenon up to the late ancient age is proposed.File in questo prodotto:
