A fragmentary calyx-krater depicting the abduction of Chrysippus was recently found in the Greek colony of Metaponto (Matera). Attributed to the Lycurgus Painter, it represents the oldest attestation of this subject in South-Italian red-figure pottery, introducing an iconographic scheme later adopted by the Darius Painter and his followers. Its occurrence in Metaponto enlarges the distribution of the vases of this workshop, which are mainly found in Peucetia.
