The paper reconstructs the unpublished story of the years, in which the young Schopenhauerian philosopher Philipp Mainländer (1841-1876) spent in Naples as an international correspondent at a commercial bank: during five years, from 1858 to 1863, the thinker from Offenbach did not live alone the best years of his tormented existence, but he devoted himself to poetry, trained in Italian literature (especially Leopardi) and discovered the philosophy of Spinoza and Schopenhauer, laying the foundations for his Philosophy of redemption. The essay also portrays the apprenticeship spent by Mainländer with his teacher, the archaeologist Wolfgang Helbig, reconstructing their events and relationships in Italy, and rebuilding the cultural environment orbiting around the Albert Detken bookshop in Naples.
