Abstract

The present case study shows that it is possible to take advantage of the environmental protection requirements to improve the quality of the project. It deals with the redevelopment of over 1500 m of the west sea water-front of the city of Bari, creating an important public space. This project goes beyond the district dimension, thanks to its environmental value and the possibility of creating a beach and a seafront that can be used during the whole year. In fact, the coastal area, with the beach, will attract many citizens from the neighborhood and will create the social mixitè essential for good quality of regeneration, which is not only made of physical works, but is above all better quality of living the city. The works are almost finished and, therefore, the concrete facts now allow to draw quite definitive conclusions, the most interesting of which lies in the very positive serendipity that accompanied the choices of environmental design. By extending the concept of McHarg to “designing with nature”, it is the authors’ conviction that these positive synergies are the norm if one favors the vocation of places through a deep environmental culture.
