Nowdays San Marzano, a village of about nine thousand inhabitants in the province of Taranto, remains the last witness of an old Albanian presence in the provinvinces of Lecce, Brindisi and Taranto. Due to various historical and social factors, this area did not develop with the cultural results which are documented for the Arbëresh areas of Sicily and Calabria are documented for the Arbëresh areas of Sicily and Calabria where a flourishing literary production arose from the older periods. The burning of the archives in Naples and the massive disappearance of the Apulian ones in the Medieval period render it difficult to reconstruct the Albanian settlements in Apulia. It is however possible to draw a summary description of the Albanian presence in Terra d’Otranto.
