Fifteen complexes of 4-nitrosodimethylaniline and 3,5-N,N-tetramethyl-4-nitrosoaniline with metal halides were prepd. and studied by solid state CP/MASNMR spectroscopy. The 13C and 15N NMR spectra give information concerning the structural changes that occur in the C-nitrosoligand on coordination to metals. Supplementary information is provided in some cases by 119Sn and 113Cd NMR spectra and also by Moessbauer spectroscopy for Sn complexes. It is not possible to distinguish between σN and σO coordination from IR spectroscopy or exclusively from these NMR studies.
