Paracartia latisetosa, introduced with fish juveniles from Alexandria, is becoming the dominant species in the lake Qarun (85 km SW from Cairo), notwithstanding the continuous growth of water salinity. Population size, recorded from 1958, does not appear correlated with temperature and/or salinity, but it seems connected with the naupliar recruitment which suffers the Mugilidae juveniles and it is favoured by phytoplankton.

Abstract

Paracartia latisetosa, introduced with fish juveniles from Alexandria, is becoming the dominant species in the lake Qarun (85 km SW from Cairo), notwithstanding the continuous growth of water salinity. Population size, recorded from 1958, does not appear correlated with temperature and/or salinity, but it seems connected with the naupliar recruitment which suffers the Mugilidae juveniles and it is favoured by phytoplankton.
