The paper covers the existing primary sources - sparse but significant - on the tax policy of the Angevin sovereigns during the century following the Sicilian Vespers, taking as its starting points three basic concepts. First of all, the factor of continuity between the taxation of Charles I and that of his successors will be examined, coming to hypothesize the existence of a system of taxation created at the end of the Norman era which retains its essential characteristics still in the Aragonese Quattrocento. Secondly, will be observed the measures taken by the Angevins to remedy the crisis, caused by war, famine and epidemics, among which there is a greater recourse to procurement, the introduction of large-scale credit economy, the attempt to exercise greater control over public officials and the partial delegation of tax rights to local authorities. Finally, I will try to identify the innovations introduced by the successors of Charles I in the economic system of the continental kingdom, starting with the development of the production of wheat and transhumance of cattle and ending with the birth of an import-export policy. The study will allow to produce some conclusions on the character of the taxation and administration of the Angevin South Italy, examined from a point of view that aims to overcome the historiographical preconceptions, relying on long-lasting phenomena.

Abstract
The study will allow to produce some conclusions on the character of the taxation and administration of the Angevin South Italy, examined from a point of view that aims to overcome the historiographical preconceptions, relying on long-lasting phenomena.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
