This chapter provides an overview of titanium dioxide (TiO2)-based materials starting from pioneering studies to recent innovations focused on design sensor devices used for the detection of a large variety of chemical species in different environments. Innovative systems achieved by integration or hybridization of materials with different properties will be highlighted. The detection of small molecules in gaseous or vapor phases, as well as the recognition of more complex species in aqueous or biological matrices, will be examined in this chapter and, possibly, rationalized in the light of the principles and mechanisms of action aimed to develop a different typology of sensors based on titanium dioxide.
