This keynote speech will give an overview of the research activities about the integration of UHF RFID technology and sensors at the Department of Innovation Engineering of University of Salento. The devices already implemented over the last 10 years as well as those still in embryonic and prototype state envisioned in view of the advent of 5G will be addressed. The presentation will initially trace the different techniques of integration between RFID and sensors studied in the past years, starting from the multi-ID approach up to robust self-powered augmented RFID-based platforms with sensing and computational capabilities. In each case, particular emphasis on the enabled applications and projects in the Internet of Things (IoT) context will be given. The prospective of RFID-sensing for IoT applications in the upcoming 5G communication systems will finally be considered. At this regard, the first experiments to implement a zero-power RFID-inspired backscattering modulation capable of enabling identification and sensing also in technologies already present in the everyday life will be addressed.
