Abstract

Originally, economic transactions were based on the use of two types of payment instruments: coins minted in precious metals, and later paper banknotes. Over time the materials have changed and new payment systems have been developed which do not involve the use of physical currency. The most innovative of these ones is represented by crypto-currencies. The availability of reliable, safe and fast tools has become an essential prerequisite at global scale, but at the same time all these characteristics of payment instruments cannot disregard the need to consider the effects on the environment. While it is relatively simple to assess the environmental impact of a metallic coin, on the other it’s more complex to quantify the overall impact coming from the use of the new instruments. In fact, the use of cashless systems can bring to the saving of material resources, for the production of physical currency, but at the same time it can correspond to an increase in energy consumption.
