The communicative strategy of Alciphron’s work is outlined through survey of the play between the external author with his readers (the audience), and the internal authors with respective readers. Alciphron, the external pepaideumenos author, addresses a likewise learned audience of pepaideumenoi, producing letters as written by four main types of fictional characters (ethe) – fishermen, farmers, parasites, courtesans –, with a far lesser degree of paideia. Every letter makes use of the rhetoric exercise (progymnasma) of ethopoiia; moreover individual letters and the whole collection show the use of some other type of progymnasmata, first of all exergasia, antirrhesis, syncrisis.
