This paper was written with the purpose of investigating the relationship between multilingualism and translation within institutions of the European Union, based upon a compilation of legislative texts written within EU scope, namely the JRC-Acquis Multilingual Parallel Corpus, which comprises texts listed in twenty-two different languages written side by side. Analysing text corpora in English, German and Italian synchronically, diachronically and contrastively, this study provides quantitative and qualitative data, attempting to verify an eventual dominance of English in the German and Italian translations. In conclusion, the re-sults of the corpus-based analysis open up the possibility to contemplate and reflect upon mul-tilingual translation from a European perspective.

Abstract
This paper was written with the purpose of investigating the relationship between multilingualism and translation within institutions of the European Union, based upon a compilation of legislative texts written within EU scope, namely the JRC-Acquis Multilingual Parallel Corpus, which comprises texts listed in twenty-two different languages written side by side. Analysing text corpora in English, German and Italian synchronically, diachronically and contrastively, this study provides quantitative and qualitative data, attempting to verify an eventual dominance of English in the German and Italian translations. In conclusion, the re-sults of the corpus-based analysis open up the possibility to contemplate and reflect upon mul-tilingual translation from a European perspective.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
