The paintings are in the purohit residence attached to the famous dynastic temple of Eklingji in the ancient Mewar state, Rajasthan The ancient house of the priest opens on the temple enclosure. On the first floor one of the outer walls is entirely decorated with paintings divided into vertical registers. The scenes show the religious rituals that used to be held in the temple itself, the kings’ processions to reach the town of Eklingji, and images of divinities including Shri Nathji. We are led to believe that the Maharana depicted here is Jagat Singh II (1734-51). This Maharana inspired a new flowering of the arts, and above all painting. It was a period that saw the production of relatively large miniatures portraying court scenes, so refined in execution, original in composition and interesting in content as to constitute authentic masterpieces. In fact they illustrate with rare analytic sense the major events of a time gone by, bringing the atmosphere of distant times to us and show a style of mature refinement and singular originality in the rendering of space. More paintings are to be seen on the second floor, but attributable to a later period (20th century).
