SFINX project (Information System for the Detection, Assessment and Management of Natural Disasters), focused on the regions of Epirus in Greece and the Salento in Italy and benefited from the participation of universities and research organisations (the Scientific Park in Patras, the University of Patras, the ΤEI in Epirus and the University of the Salento), the Prefecture of Etolokarnania and the municipalities of Arachtoy and Lecce. The objective of the project, led by the Greek partner, was the development of integrated methods for the prevention and management of natural disasters, particularly flooding and other water-related phenomena, in the regions of Epirus in Greece and the Salento in Italy. The need for this project arose from the shortage of studies and statistics in the two regions, coupled with the absence of proper monitoring of socio-economic activities with an environmental impact. Also lacking were databases and geo-referenced maps of electrical and water-supply networks and sewers on the municipal level. Furthermore, the two areas in question have no satellite detection service (in terms of Risk Management) for the Environmental and Quality-of-Life sectors, and no projects dealing with the prevention of natural disasters or assistance, relief and reconstruction for the affected population.
