The aim of the paper is to enlighten the role of popular culture as a resource for development in peripheral areas. The results are explained of an empirical analysis conducted in a Southern-Italian province, which shows that cultural heritage can be a basic resource for local development and the possibility exists for the creation of a good level of awareness concerning the scope, limits and risks of the celebration of local identity.
