An effective protection of constructions exposed at seismic risk can be obtained increasing the knowledge about the dynamic behaviour of structures, particularly when referring to buildings of architectural or historical value. The unique structural techniques and uncertainties affecting geometry and material properties make accurate analyses of heritage structures difficult, under both gravity and seismic actions. In this context an effective evaluation of modal properties can be useful to acquire detailed informations on real dynamic response of the whole construction or of its components. This paper deals with the structural identification of an historical masonry building located in Lecce (Southern Italy), characterized by the presence of ancient vaulted roofs. An experimental campaign based on output-only dynamic tests has been started in order to define modal properties of such vaulted systems and with the end focus of fulfilling a reliable numerical model of the vaults based on a macroelement approach. The results of some tests carried out to approach the problem are herein reported.
