ThE book contains the Acts of the International Congress entitled: Tourism, Religion & Culture: Regional Development through Meaningful Tourism Experiences (, Lecce, Poggiardo 27th-29th October 2009), organised by the University of the Salento in collaboration with the Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna, Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich, University of Haifa, Association for Tourism and Leisure Education-ATLAS and “Sphera spin off” of the University of the Salento. Considering the concept of tourism as the dynamo of local development to be fairly well consolidated, the congress focuses on a number of suggestive tourism experiences in the field of culture and religion. The Congress hosted scholars of diverse religions, cultures and academic backgrounds, who have come to Puglia from various parts of the world to discuss tourism in holy places, its role in different religious confessions and the benefits it produces for the local communities and regions that are affected by it. It has been an inter-cultural summit on a theme that is as old as the history of human beings: undertaking a journey to a holy place is one of the most ancient forms of non-economic travel there is.
