THE PHYSICS OF LHC: THEORETICAL TOOLS & EXPERIMENTAL CHALLENGES to be held from June 9-14, 2005 in Martignano (Lecce, Italy). The aim of the school is to bring together young experimentalists and theorists and help them learn the tools for physics at the LHC. It is addressed to Ph.D. students or post-docs, in both experimental and theoretical high-energy physics, from Italy, Greece and other European and Mediterranean countries. The theory lectures will be aimed mainly towards experimentalists and the experimental lectures to theorists. A total of approximately 32 hours of lectures will be delivered, evenly split between theoretical and experimental topics. SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM Lecture topics: Theory: - Electroweak physics at the LHC - QCD at the LHC - MonteCarlo tools for the LHC - Higgs physics at the LHC - Physics beyond the Standard Model at the LHC - B Physics - Quark-gluon plasma Experiment: - Trigger and DAQ - Tracking - Calorimetry - Muon id - Accelerator physics - Top analysis at CDF - ALICE and its physics programme - LHCb and its physics programme Preliminary list of lecturers: Theory: Corcella (CERN), Romanino (CERN), Grazzini (CERN), Isidori (LNF, Frascati), Polosa (Bari), Tamvakis (Ioannina), Zeppenfeld (Karlsruhe) Experiment: Bonivento (Cagliari), Leone (Pisa), Schwick (CERN), Silvestris (Bari), Masera (Torino), Primavera (Lecce), Scandale (CERN) Special Lecture: Prof. John Iliopoulos (Paris) COMMITTEES Scientific Board: Michelangelo Mangano (chairman, CERN) Gianpaolo Carlino (Napoli) Giorgio Chiarelli (Pisa) Vittorio Del Duca (Torino) Franco Grancagnolo (Lecce) Clara Matteuzzi (CERN) Fabrizio Palla (Pisa) Roberto Perrino (Lecce) Luciano Ramello (Alessandria) Paris Sphicas (Athens, CERN) Theodore Tomaras (Crete) Organizing Committee: Claudio Coriano' (chairman, Lecce) Vincenzo Barone (Alessandria) Philip G. Two afternoons will be left free for excursions to tourist sites (Otranto, Gallipoli) and to the beaches. The site of the School is the Palazzo Palmieri in Martignano, 18 km from Lecce (Italy). Martignano is located in the Grecia Salentina, a linguistic island of Griko - an ancient language related to Greek, not far from the Adriatic Sea (15 km) and from Otranto (20 km). The School fee is 200 euro. This will cover all lunches, the social dinner and the excursions. Attendance is limited to 50 students. All participants will be accommodated at the Hotel delle Palme, Lecce, within walking distance of the city centre. The rate for a double room is 40 euros per person per day. A few single rooms are also available on request. Transportation from the Hotel to the School site will be provided. The School is sponsored by the INFN, the Universita' di Lecce, the Universita' del Piemonte Orientale, the Universita' dell'Insubria, the Provincia di Lecce and the Unione dei Comuni della Grecia Salentina.
