The University of Salento (Italy), the University of Vermont (USA) and the Ecology Centre of the University of Kiel (Germany) are glad to invite you to participate in the Conference on Modelling Ecosystem services to enhance the understanding of ecosystem services in the context of management, restoration, and conservation, by using a modelling approach. Conference site: www.mes2009.it Human life is strongly dependent on the benefits that nature provide every day. Worldwide, these benefits are known as ecosystem services and they have been recognized very difficult to be duplicated. Ecosystem services are severely threatened, mainly, because of: 1) the growth in the scale of human demand and, consequently, a mismatch between short-term needs and long-term societal well-being, and 2) a mismatch between the spatial-temporal scales of ecological processes, that support ecosystem services, and the institutional levels, where the decision are taken. Since many questions remain unanswered about the workings of ecosystem services. The aim of the conference is to bring together well-known scholars and researchers to provide a broad discussion about the issue of modelling applied to ecosystem services in the context of socio-ecological landscapes for conservation, restoration, resource management and decision-making.
