Satellite communication systems, such as SkyplexNet, are certainly an adequate reply to the increasing demand for wide-band wireless networks able to support multimedia applications. Dealing with SkyplexNet framework, this paper describes a research activity that has tackled the problem to transfer interactive real-time VBR flows by a dynamic bandwidth allocation schema instead of a static one, thus improving bandwidth utilization. This is not trivial because of high delay related to the interaction phase between terminals requiring resources and the resource request scheduler. In order to solve the problem, an appropriate MAC scheduling algorithm has been defined and the strategy adopted by terminals for estimating their resource requirements has been carefully designed. In particular, within the MAC resource management entity, an estimator that exploits an adaptive linear prediction module has been considered. A simulation model of the proposed MAC scheduling is described and the related results are also presented in this paper.
