This work aims at analysing the evolution of tourism demand in the province of Lecce in order to figure out if, and to which extent, the tourist sector can be considered as pivotal for the economic development of this region. The econometric analysis of the monthly tourist nights, between January 1988 and December 2003, allows us to ascertain the persistency of seasonality in the Province of Lecce and to draw policy indications.
