Established companies operating within highly competitive environments, with strong regulatory issues, new competitors, technological changes and market saturation, have a continuous pressure to pursue innovation and improve their competitive positioning. Corporate Entrepreneurship (CE) and Open Innovation (OI) revealed as very effective and valuable strategies to achieve this goal. This paper describes how the Italian National Railways group (here after FSI group - Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane) has undertaken a path to explore new business models by designing and launching an initiative to find new ideas, support them in the development, and promote them in the final aim to launch new products and services. The ideas that have been researched and explored are not those directly related to the core corporate business, but aim to explore new boundaries that include assets available within the organization, leverage the advantages coming from market positionings and find additional resources already existent within the organization as potential sources of additional value. To achieve these goals, the FSI Group has built in 2017 (and developed in 2018) the Innovate Project, which is the first experimentation of CE process within the FSI Group, by adopting an OI approach.
