ABSTRACT This paper analyzes a collection of 693 metaphorical phraseological units used in the Argentinian variety of Spanish. The units were manually extracted from Diccionario fraseológico del habla argentina (DiFHA, 2010) by selecting all the items with a zoomorphic component. The theoretical framework for the analysis is Lakoff and Johnson’s conceptual metaphor theory (1980); this framework sees the metaphor as a cognitive mechanism to conceptualize our experience in the world. The purpose of the current analysis is to explain the correspondence between the processes of metaphorical projection and the way Argentineans express themselves. The paper illustrates the wide variety of fauna present in the phraseological units considered and shows how they are used to perform a range of functions, including the following: to refer to characteristics and behaviors that are typically human; to describe attitudes; to describe situations; to illustrate behaviors; and to compare and contrast specific traits. Furthermore, an attempt is made to identify some sociocultural features that reveal the great creative richness and expressive power of the zoomorphic expressions and that characterize them as a productive linguistic resource.
