Herakleia (Policoro, Matera) was long considered the place of birth of South-Italian red-figure pottery, an assumption that the discovery of the Metaponto kilns proved to be wrong. Although the excavations undertaken in the second half of the last century greatly increased the quantity of red-figure vases from the city and its chora, they have has never been studied in detail. The paper is focused on the re-evaluation of the evidence yielded by sanctuaries and tombs from Herakleia to explore the identity and nature of the production and consumption of figured pottery from the site.

Abstract
