This study analysed the epidemiology of toxoplasmosis in the area of Brindisi in order to evaluate the toxoplasma spreading within the local community, to assess the annual seroconversion rate and foetal risk, and to develop adequate prevention campaigns. Toxoplasma antibody detection was conducted by quantitative enzyme linked fluorescent assay (ELFA) in 1‰ of the general population in the area of Brindisi and among pregnant women followed at «D. Camberlingo» Hospital, Francavilla Fontana, during 1994-1998. Moreover, foetal risk was calculated among these pregnant women. The results of this study showed an intermediate endemic level in the area of AUSL/BR1; toxoplasma antibody prevalence appeared to rise progressively with age. The antibody prevalence rate was 35.4% in age group 15-44 years. The prevalence rate exceeded 60% only among persons aged 45-64 years and > 65 years. Seroprevalence rates are similar in males and females, except for age group 5-14 years (p < 0.05). Based on these data, the foetal risk in pregnant women was not particularly elevated (0.8%).
